Passports / ID: Ireland - France

EU Citizens - Passports:

On our Dublin – Cherbourg route, all EU citizens (including babies) must have their own valid passport or officially recognised European Union I.D. card when travelling to and from Ireland or France.   Passports must be valid for longer than the duration of your planned stay.

No visa is required for Irish or French/EU citizens for leisure trips to Ireland or France.

For longer stays for professional or study purposes, click the links for the French Embassy in Ireland and the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs for the relevant travel advice.

British Citizens - Passports & Visas:

On our Dublin - Cherbourg route, British citizens who are holders of UK passports must ensure:

  1. Passports are issued less than 10 years before the date you enter France (check the 'date of issue')
  2. Passports are valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave France (check the 'expiry' date)

British citizens do not need a visa for a leisure stay in France of up to 90 days in a 180 day period.  You may need a visa or permit to stay longer, to work or study, or for business travel.  We recommend that you check the travel advice on the UK government website or the UK French Embassy website.

Non-EU nationals:

Non-EU nationals should check with the relevant embassy before travelling, as they may need a visa as well as a passport. A visa can take several weeks to obtain, so please make the necessary arrangements well ahead of your travel date.   For further information on visas for travel to France, check the advice on the French government website.  For information on visas for travel to Ireland, check the advice on the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs website.
