Applications for an ETA (the digital travel permit required for travellers who want to travel to the United Kingdom but do not require a full visa) can be made:
- Online via the official UK government website here
OR
- Using the UK ETA app. The app is only available in English for both iOS and Android users.
Who needs an ETA? An ETA is needed for travellers from countries that could enjoy visa-free travel in the past to the UK, as well as citizens of the EU, EEA and other specific countries. The latest list of countries is available to check here. The ETA is required for short stays, such as holidays and business trips, as well as for transits via the UK, and this requirement will be strictly enforced from 25 February 2026, and passengers who require an ETA but do not have one will not be able to travel.
Note: British and Irish citizens, including dual citizens, are exempt from needing an ETA, and need to ensure they have a valid passport (or certificate of entitlement for Dual British citizens) when travelling, to avoid problems like being denied boarding.
What do I need for an application? A valid passport and trip details are required. The fee is approximately £16 (subject to change).
What is the approval time? Travellers are advised to make the request at least 3 working days before departure.
What is the validity of an ETA? An ETA is valid for a period of 2 years or until your passport expires. It is important to check ETA validity for your trip and renew it if necessary.
Further details on the ETA and the EU Entry and Exit Scheme (EES) are available here.
